Mt. George

Mt. George Elementary school is located along the eastern side of the Napa Valley, surrounded by vineyards, horses and valley oaks. We are well on our way to becoming an authorized IB school and will submit Application B this winter. Our journey with IB began with an inquiry into how to save our small school from closure during a time of increased fiscal problems. Our staff knew that we wanted a program that embraced our philosophy of inquiry based, child centered learning and teaching and found that the PYP program fit like a glove. We began embracing IB even before we started training and implementation, finding that common values and goals towards international education were easily integrated into our teaching. After visiting PYP schools, studying and reflecting, we decided to become an IB school in May, 2007.

At this point on our journey, the PYP is evident all around us. Our students, who already were great thinkers and inquirers have become able to question and discover in more meaningful , deeper ways. During our first Exhibition last spring, the fourth and fifth grades shared their learning of topics of true global significance and actions that mattered. Mt. George’s Program of Inquiry is in place, and we can’t seem to stop ourselves from coming up with more and more ideas. The Learner Profile is common language for all of us and a strong foundation for our interactions with each other. The students are noticing and naming how the pieces of the PYP connect with their actions, intentions, and learning all around the school.

The teamwork and dedication of our staff makes our journey a very satisfying one. As we continue towards authorization, we look forward to seeing more and more evidence that this is indeed, the right thing for all kids.
