California Association of IB world Schools

August 2015 – President’s Letter

As we all embark on another academic year, we would be wise to consider how fortunate we are to be IB educators. Education continues to be scrutinized and reconstructed as citizens of our state and country recognize the limits of standardized exams as accurate measurements of the potential of our students. It should be of no surprise to anyone familiar with the IB that the architects of Common Core State Standard, CCSS, conferred with IBA when creating more holistic national exams. The launch in the Spring of 2015 of the CCSS summative assessments found IB educators in California well- trained and their students well prepared for these exams. The value of an IB education is ever more apparent as our country reevaluates how we prepare our children for the 21st century.

Your CAWS organization supports the well established pedagogical leadership of IB and strives to further establish an understanding of our programmes at the local and state level. We will continue to expand our goals of supporting, educating and providing service to the IB schools of California. In the coming months, look for news on local roundtables, expanded scholarships, updated IBA data on California schools and CAWS co-sponsored events with IBA and UCI. CAWS will continue to offer excellent teacher training at Granlibakken, Lake Tahoe, our Fall Forum in San Diego, and our Spring Forum in Sacramento. The dates can be found on the CAWS website: Details will follow as they are finalized.

The opportunities that we have as educators to inspire and encourage our students to be engaged, dynamic and involved global citizens should serve as a source of energy as we face the joys as well as the potential challenges of the coming academic year. I encourage all IB educators to extol with enthusiasm the value of our Learner Profile which serves as the backbone of our approach to teaching. The qualities we strive to develop and model beautifully serve as a reminder that all people learn on a continuum and that qualitative attributes serve as the foundation of all learning throughout our lives.

As your CAWS president, I would like to thank you for your continued support. I deeply admire and appreciate the care you provide to our students as you motivate them to make a positive difference in the world.

Best regards,

Robin Oliver
CAWS President
